Discipleship must be FOUNDATIONAL

Yesterday I shared the acronoym FIRST regarding effective discipleship.  Discipleship must be Foundational, Intentional, Relational, Situational and Transformational.  Over the next couple of weeks I want to breakdown each of these priorities one at a time.  Today let’s by start with the first letter of FIRST; Discipleship must be Foundational.

In Matthew 28:18-20 Jesus gives the disciples a commission.  The essence of what he says can be summed up in four words: “Go and make disciples.” This was not a suggestion or a good idea, this was a command.  The disciples were to reproduce themselves in order to build Jesus’ Church.

Therefore discipleship is foundational to fulfilling the Great Commission and living in obedience as a Christian.  Every church needs to promote and demonstrate effective discipleship.  Every Christian needs to be involved in the discipleship journey.  As a follower of Christ you should continue to be discipled and continue to be discipling!

In the next few posts I will clarify some thoughts regarding effective discipleship, but first things first.  Discipleship must foundational in our churches and in our lives.  It must come FIRST.  It must be of the highest importance.  There is no substitute or alternate method.  Jesus said, “Go and make disciples.” So let’s do it!
